Title: Manual therapy in pain management: An integrative review

Abstract

Introduction: Manual Therapy is one of the oldest therapeutic resources used in rehabilitation. We can describe this technique as the use of manual skills, including but not limited to mobilization or manipulation, to assess and treat soft tissue and joint structures. For modulating pain and increasing range of motion. Goals. There is a vast literature on manual therapy, most of which is probably unknown to traditional manual therapists and certainly unknown to other professionals with no interest in manual therapy. The objective of the study was to carry out a literature review, seeking studies that observed scientific evidence of manual therapy in the treatment of pain.

Method: An integrative bibliographic review was carried out in the following databases: Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Pedro, Cochrane Library, Jama, Pubmed, Bvs, using the following keywords: “manual therapy and pain”, “manual therapy”, “ manual physiotherapy”, “manupulative physiotherapy”.

Results:
Meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and clinical studies were selected, which observed in their results an improvement in chronic and acute low back pain, chronic neck pain, migraine, and tension headache, shoulder pain, idiopathic scoliosis, femoroacetabular impingement, cervicogenic dizziness, knee osteoarthritis, pain musculoskeletal disorders, temporomandibular disorders, oncologic musculoskeletal pain after mastectomy, using manual therapy associated with other techniques and therapeutic resources.
Conclusion. Manual Therapy is a therapeutic resource with scientific evidence and can help in the treatment of pain. The treatment must be carried out in a multimodal way, including other techniques and therapeutic resources for better effectiveness.
